Did you protest? If so, what was the end result this year? I’d love to hear how you faired, and if you don’t mind sharing, it may help someone else with their protest. If not, there is still time!
Here is a little information about protesting:
Did you know, the DEADLINE TO PROTEST YOUR PROPERTY TAXES IS MAY 16th? I know the appraisals have caused a lot of sticker shock, and many new homeowners don’t know if it is worth protesting. Let me be the first to say that you should protest EVERY YEAR, no matter if you feel the value is fair or not. And in case you were wondering, your appraised value is the one thing you want as close to zero as possible. Having lower property tax will even add value to your home in the eyes of potential buyers when the time comes to sell.
The property tax value is established through an automated system, and not by someone actually performing a detailed appraisal. And we all know that systems like that never make mistakes, right? WRONG! This is why protesting is strongly encouraged.
To protest, follow the instructions on your blue sheet, or go to your county appraisal district website and log in. By filing online, you can submit your opinion of value and reach an agreement directly with the appraisal district, or review your options a lot faster than if you mail it in.
If your home needs some work, having pictures and estimates will help in lowering your value. And keep in mind, if you do go to a hearing, it is with a group of your peers and not a judge, so it is a lot easier to go through than a lot of people think.
